A rail town with an early power plant

Attalla was founded in 1870 on land donated by W.C. Hammond and incorporated on February 5, 1872.  It was named Attalla in 1893 from a Cherokee word, otali, meaning mountain.  Rail lines connected the town to other markets, and its prosperity dipped when railroads went bankrupt.[2]

In 1887, Attalla hosted the first hydroelectric dam built to provide electricity for a city.  The 2020 Census counted 5,827 residents, and Interstate 59 runs along the eastern edge with exits at 181 and 183.  For businesses and property owners, shops, storage and commercial buildings are common needs.[2]
