A railroad bridge and a river landing
Bridgeport began after the 1840s as a riverboat landing called Jonesville and was renamed Bridgeport in 1854 when a railroad bridge over the Tennessee River was completed. The 2020 census counted 2,264 residents.[2]
The USS Chattanooga was built here during the Civil War and became part of the Cracker Line, which helped break the siege of Chattanooga in November 1863. The Bridgeport Depot Museum, completed in 1917, holds railroad items, and an annual April reenactment recalls the siege.[2]
The Cumberland Plateau lies to the northwest and Sand Mountain across the river to the east. Properties here range from river lots to hilltop acreage, so the right building varies with the site.[2]
