A very old settlement on the Coosa
Childersburg was incorporated in 1889 and claims to be the oldest occupied settlement in America, a claim tied to Hernando de Soto's visit in the fall of 1540. Majestic Caverns, formerly DeSoto Caverns, is here, with a main room just over ten stories high.[2,3]
In World War II the nearby Alabama Army Ammunition Plant operated from 1941 to 1945 and drew over 14,000 workers. Industrial and river properties like these often use steel for shops, storage and light commercial work.[2]
