The settlement was chosen as county seat in 1826 and renamed Columbiana on January 13, 1832, then incorporated on December 5, 1837. The marble courthouse built from 1905 to 1908 still serves the county, and the 1854 courthouse now holds the Shelby County Museum and Archives.[2]
Section 41 of the 1901 Alabama constitution protects Columbiana's status by requiring a public vote to move the county seat. A town with that much history often has older buildings, and metal roofing and siding are common ways owners update them.[2]

The city covers 17.4 square miles along Alabama State Route 25, about 25 miles southeast of Birmingham.[2]
