From a Cherokee-era fort to a sock mill city
The city traces to the 1830s, when Major John Payne built a fort near Willstown to hold Cherokee. It was incorporated in 1889 during the Boom Days that followed coal and iron discoveries, and it counted 14,877 residents in 2020.[2]
Hosiery began here in 1907, and the city grew to more than 100 mills with over 7,000 workers, producing more than half of the socks made in the United States. A city with that industrial history often has property owners looking at shops, storage and light commercial space.[2]
Just outside town, Little River Canyon National Preserve sits on top of Lookout Mountain. If you are planning a mountain cabin or barndominium, plan for a site where the terrain and views may affect design.[2,3]

Fort Payne questions
General information. Every project is different, so call us about yours.
Is a steel cabin or barndominium a good idea on a mountain lot near the canyon?
Many mountain properties are built on slopes with views. RBC designs barndominiums and can build turnkey. The right plan depends on the site, so consider a site visit with your builder.[3]
Could an old mill-style building be replaced with a steel one?
Steel commercial buildings can serve shops, warehouses and light industrial use. RBC designs and builds them with workmanship warranties on commercial turnkey construction.[2]
What metal roof color suits a wooded mountain setting?
Many people pick earth tones that blend with trees and rock. The color visualizer lets you test options before deciding.[3]
Do I need to check anything before building near a national preserve?
Property near protected land may have its own limits, so check with the city or county building office and any relevant agency first. RBC can then design around what you learn.[3]
