The town was first called Samples, established December 14, 1883, and was renamed Hollywood on May 13, 1887. It was incorporated on May 24, 1897, six years before Hollywood, California.[2]
In 1994 the town and ten other towns named Hollywood fought an attempt by Hollywood, California to trademark the name. The 2020 census counted 914 residents here.[2]
