Madison has grown from a railroad stop into a large city that many Huntsville workers call home.  Building needs there lean toward family homes, garages and neighborhood outbuildings.

A small rail stop that kept growing

Madison was incorporated on December 2, 1869, and grew around a Memphis and Charleston Railroad stop in the 1850s.  Its population was 4,057 in 1980 and 42,938 in 2010, then 56,933 in the 2020 Census.[2]

Many residents commute to Cummings Research Park and Redstone Arsenal, about 12 miles away.  In a large commuter community, owners often look at garages, workshops and roof upgrades for homes, and some land at the edges still suits bigger buildings.[2]

My lot is in a newer Madison subdivision.  Can I add a steel garage?

Often possible, but covenants, setbacks and the city permitting office decide.  Ask them first, then call to talk about size and style.[2]

What if my property is in the Limestone County part of Madison?

The city crosses a county line, so check with the right permitting office for your parcel.  We cannot describe their rules, but we can help plan the building.[2]

Frequently asked questions

Is a hobby shop in steel a reasonable choice for a commuter household?

Many people use a steel shop for tools, vehicles and projects.  It depends on your lot and budget, and pole barns can be scaled to your budget.[2]
