A college town with old roots
Jesse Wilson claimed a small hill here after the land was acquired in 1814, making Montevallo the oldest settlement in Shelby County, and the city incorporated in 1848. The name is Italian for the hill in the valley. The University of Montevallo began in 1896 as the Alabama Girls' Industrial School and later became the city's main employer after coal mining ended in 1946.[2]
