Rainbow City was incorporated in 1950 and takes its name from Rainbow Drive, which is U.S. Highway 411 running through the middle of the city. The 2020 census counted 10,191 residents.[2]
The city is bordered by Gadsden to the northeast and the Coosa River to the southeast. Neely Henry Lake, formed by a dam completed in 1966, covers 11,200 surface acres along the Coosa in Calhoun, Etowah and St. Clair counties.[2,3]
